Kate Burchell and Henry Johnstone’s wedding was a celebration of love, friendship, and family, with a unique blend of romance and personal touches. The couple, who met on Hinge nearly three years ago, got engaged at Hyde Melbourne Place, where Henry had set up a room with all of Kate’s favorite things, including Loco Love chocolate and orange wine.
Kate and Henry gave themselves 10 months to plan their wedding, which was to take place in May, followed by a European summer honeymoon in June. They quickly locked in Thomas JPG for photos and booked Hope Street Radio in Collingwood Yards as their venue. Kate, who had previously worked with Ruby Farley-Steere, designer of Melbourne label Kateri, on a custom piece, knew she wanted to work with her again for her wedding dress.

Ruby re-envisioned Kate’s existing dress from Lucy Folk into a separate skirt and top, and designed a sculptural veil to match. She also used leftover pieces of fabric to create Henry’s tie and designed four other guests’ wedding outfits. The couple’s wedding day unfolded in stages, with a celebration at Ma House, an intimate ceremony at Hope Street, rooftop drinks at Runner Up, and a larger reception back at the venue.
The day was filled with personal touches. The couple served stand-up canapés and their favorite cocktails, and later, had late-night burgers, cannoli and a dance floor.
Henry says the whole day was perfect, and nothing felt rushed or overwhelming. The couple’s decision to break up the day into stages, with a quiet moment at Ma House, a smaller ceremony, drinks, and then a larger reception, helped to gradually build up the day. For Kate and Henry, the best part of their day was the way it all came together, with their loved ones, to create a truly unforgettable celebration.
